Israel is observing Memorial Day, a somber annual commemoration that has taken on added significance this year in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attack and the war it ignited. I took a fantastic drive the other day across the top of Connecticut, from Simsbury over to Kingston, N.Y., through old tobacco fields and cow pastures and apple orchards and into the Hudson Valley under a bluebird sky. Slow-roasted salmon with salsa verde? I settled on artichoke carbonara (above), with bucatini and a garnish of raw egg yolk, to almost literally gild the lily. I drove over the bridge from Rhinecliff in afternoon sunlight and could almost see the dish glimmering below me on the river. I like it on any Sunday, but if you’re in need of a fantastic Mother’s Day meal, it’d be extra nice this evening.

☆ Bus Crash in Indonesia Kills 11, Including Students, After Graduation Celebration

A bus carrying students and teachers returning from a graduation celebration crashed in Subang, Indonesia, on Saturday evening, killing at least 11 people, many of them students. The crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. as the vehicle was returning from a hilly resort area in Bandung to Depok, West Java, the authorities said. While the cause of the accident was still under investigation on Sunday, the West Java police said that the bus had sped out of control on a downhill road and crashed into multiple vehicles. An initial investigation revealed that the bus was apparently not fit for the road and had malfunctioning brakes. There were 61 passengers aboard, according to the police, who said that nine people died at the scene and two died later in a hospital.

☆ A Severe Solar Storm Is Hitting the Earth, and Auroras May Be Visible

Dramatic blasts of particles from the surface of the sun have prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to issue a severe geomagnetic storm warning. As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface. This type of space weather is what creates auroras, also known as the northern and southern lights, depending on the hemisphere in which you live. During the current geomagnetic storm, the aurora or northern lights may extend as far south as Northern California or Alabama. The latest eruptions were first observed early on Wednesday morning, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth.

CNN —A major US health care system said Thursday that it is diverting ambulances from “several” of its hospitals following a cyberattack this week. The sprawling health care network, which also owns 40 senior living facilities, said that it would be using “downtime procedure for some time,” because of the cyberattack. It was not clear how many Ascension hospitals were sending ambulances to other locations because of the cyberattack. It’s only the latest major hacking incident that has hobbled a big US health care network and sent US officials scrambling to offer support. CNN —The United Nations’ agency for Palestinian refugees will shutter its East Jerusalem headquarters after the compound was set on fire by “Israeli extremists” while staff were inside, its chief said Thursday. “This evening, Israeli residents set fire twice to the perimeter of the UNRWA Headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem. This took place while UNRWA and other UN Agencies’ staff were on the compound,” Lazzarini said. Israeli officials have long criticized UNRWA, which plays a central role in feeding and sheltering hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees. Anything less will set a new dangerous standard.”CNN has reached out to the Israeli government for comment.
